Charles Leerhsen as on this weekend's edition of NPR's sports show Only a Game, talking about his book Crazy Good: The True Story of Dan Patch, the Most Famous Horse in America. The horse was a celebrity. He began his career by setting a world pacing record at the 1906 Minnesota State Fair and ended it touring the country in a luxury rail car, meeting his adoring fans. But the advent of the motor car cooled America's enthusiasm for Dan Patch, and he died in obscurity. (You can listen to the show here; scroll about halfway down the page.)
Leerhsen, a senior editor at Sports Illustrated magazine, will be in town on June 21. First, he'll be signing books at Canterbury Park racetrack in Shakopee from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Then from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, he'll be at Dan Patch Days, in Savage.--David E
