Twin Cities Live Co-Host, Elizabeth Ries is a lover of books. In addition to the many books she reads for her own pleasure, she hosts a monthly book club, often featuring books from Midwest authors. Cooking is Elizabeth's passion, and she's growing as much of her own food as possible in her backyard garden. As part of our Notable Community Reader Series, she shared some favorite food and farming related memoirs -- just in time for June in Minnesota.
This May, we were fortunate enough to receive reading recommendations from Dr. Bernadeia H. Johnson. Since 2010, Dr. Johnson has been the superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools, where she is
directly responsible for overseeing academic achievement for all
students, as well as the school district’s business functions. She's also a passionate reader, and kindly shared some of her favorite books with us:

Books and Bars producer and emcee Jeff Kamin has been our partner in reading for nearly 10 years. We asked Jeff to recommend a few of his favorite reads--it was a cruel request to limit him to a few--which are now on display in the store. Jeff's picks are smart, funny, and colorful, just like the man himself. And if your spidey-sense is tingling, that's because Jeff also tapped into his love for comics and graphic novels as part of his recommendations.

You know them as the Mayor and First Lady of Minneapolis, managing the many facets of running our fair city. R.T. Rybak and Megan O'Hara are also book lovers and fans of things local to Minneapolis. They are often out and about, frequenting neighborhood businesses, such as Magers and Quinn. The Mayor and Ms. O'Hara graciously shared recommendations with us of some of their recent reads.

I loved this story of rural life filled with quirky and appealing characters. I love the descriptions of landscape and small town life that ring true for us in Minnesota.
I always like a good memoir like this one about leaders in Minnesota's organic agriculture movement. A big fat reminder that Roosevelt's lusty appetite for the outdoors transformed our country. Starting with truly funny tales of the geeky young Teddy's obsession with animals it follows him through saving many of our greatest natural resources.

Based on a real story, this is the fictional account of an Oglala Sioux boy who leaves South Dakota after Little BIg Horn, joins Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and gets left behind for years when the show visits France. Each time he crosses into a new culture, you're reminded what immigrants to Minneapolis face every day The World in 2050, by Laurence C. Smith
I'm not usually big on futurist books but this dispassionate projection of where we are headed paints a fascinating picture of a post climate changed world. Some scary stuff but a bonus for us is that the only US city it mentions thriving is Minneapolis.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Most people think of chocolate and flowers for Valentine's Day but how about those great romantic stories? Why not share that with the one you love?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I stumbled across this list some time ago of the 10 Most Romantic Books. Do you agree?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Perhaps this list is a bit too classic? too traditional?

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">How about some Contemporary Romance Books?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Whether it's crazy obsessive love, Lifetime movie love or prim and proper love, giving the gift of books for Valentine's Day is a pretty cool idea. And we won't judge if you choose the sparkly vampire kind of love story.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

allow extra time for reading the copy about raising chickens in an urban
setting. If you know someone who had their own chickens, someone who loves to
cook or someone who just likes to read cookbooks this is my recommendation.

The number of attendees and book sales at this event made it one of the most successful events we have had at Magers and Quinn. The ongoing commitment Colin makes to the marketing and promotion of his books, and himself as an author, are part of what made this event so successful.

After talking with him about his marketing techniques, we asked if he would be willing to share them, and he graciously obliged. His recipe for successful book launch events follows. We feel it includes tips and an approach that also apply to events held after the launch, to selling books in stores and online, and to successful marketing, promoting and selling of books in general, for both self-published authors and those that work with publishers.
On Saturday, December 1 from 10:30am-12:30pm we are having a supremely festive event. We are partnering with Way to Grow, a local non-profit organization supporting children's literacy to host a visit with Santa and story time with local author, Marianne Richmond.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A little about Way to Grow from their website:

For over 20 years, Way
to Grow has been one of the preeminent early learning programs in the
Twin Cities. We focused on the most important stages of life — from
prenatal to kindergarten — and parenting. In October 2010, we launch the
Great by Eight Initiative in partnership with the Minneapolis Public
Schools. This new program expands our research-based model to grade
three, age eight.

We’re on a mission.

We firmly believe that every child should be born healthy, stay
healthy and have the equal opportunity to succeed in school and life.
And that can only happen with parents’ active participation. Through our
in-home and center-based programming, we help parents create a healthy
home and become their children’s first and most important teachers.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">If you choose, 15% of your total purchase will go to support Way to Grow. Ask for the voucher at the register.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Santa and Mrs. Claus are coming to town to share stories and treats with your children and beloved pets! Remember your camera to take photos of your time with Santa!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Award winning Minneapolis author and artist, Marianne Richmond, author of I Love You so Much and I believe in You, will be here to share her love of giving creative voice to the feelings and stories of life. We are very pleased, as I am sure Ms. Erdrich is, that The Round House was picked as the 2012 National Book Award winner in Fiction.

Also, local author William Alexander (and former Magers and Quinn employee) was also the winner in Young People's Literature for his novel, Goblin Secrets.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">GREAT MODERN MEMOIRS: As a practitioner of that sticky genre
of memoir writing, I am drawn to the art of great story
telling that utilizes all of the elements of the best fiction writing
while working with the raw chaotic materials of real life. I believe
that the writer of memoir is not allowed to make stuff up.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER: (well known master works such as
THE LIAR'S CLUB, ANGELA'S ASHES, THIS BOY'S LIFE,TRUTH & BEAUTY, WILD,
THE GLASS CASTLE & everything SEDARIS, LAMOTT, EGGERS, and
KLOSTERMAN excluded but enthusiastically recommended -- they
don't need my plug.)

Semisonic drummer Slichter artfully re-creates the personal &
professional journey that plummeted this Minneapolis band to the top of the charts in
the late '90s. Written with thoughtfulness, skill, and wit, a
fascinating tale for musicians and music lovers as well of fans of great writing.
EVERYTHING I'M CRACKED UP TO BE, Jen Trynin
In the mid 1990s Trynin found herself in one of the largest major
record label bidding wars of that time when
indie artists were being wined and dine based on the meteoric
success of Nirvana's NEVERMIND. A funny, heartbreaking account

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> of an artist as a young woman feeling her way through life and big
business..
THE BILL FROM MY FATHER, Bernard Cooper
A most heart-breaking and at times hilarious account of a man
trying to know and understand his baffling father in both life and
death. Cooper is a poet and his prose is gorgeous.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> THE TENDER BAR, J.R. Moehringer
The romantic allure of a bar named Dicken's is the main character in this coming of age memoir.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Moehringer finds family, salvation, and community
inside this Long Island watering hole until it catches up with him in
that way that bars often do.
LOVE IS A MIX TAPE, Rob Sheffield

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This memoir is about two young music lovers in love set in the late
'80s and early '90s. Anyone interested in the great music from those years and capable of
appreciating a heart-breaking love story will be forever moved by Sheffield's
great big heart.
DARKROOM, Jill Christman
A criminally under-appreciated master work, DARKROOM is one of the most
gorgeously written, wise and thoughtful memoirs I have ever read.
Dealing with family tragedy, abuse, and self-destructiveness, Christman is never a victim but

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> instead a clear-eyed witness who overcomes unspeakable adversity.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Why this was never a bestseller is beyond me. A recounting of a youthful
trip to the far corners of the earth with an unstable travel
companion, this
memoir is beautifully written and riveting.
I COULD TELL YOU STORIES, Patricia Hampl
St. Paul's Hampl is, to my mind, the foremost expert and practitioner
of memoir writing today. All of her memoirs are superb, but this one is an essay collection
discussing and deconstructing the genre and the way it can and should
be practiced. I consider it a memoirist's bible.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

A beautifully wrought essay collection by another of our great memoirist, it's
the book from which I pluck most of my teaching materials. Beard's eye
for sensory detail is second to none, and her writing voice is crystal clear, funny, and thoughtful.

A haunting memoir about an English childhood in the 1970s. Music
is the governing theme while Greenlaw examines with a sharp eye for
