I've blogged about needlessly expensive editions of books whose primary purpose seem to be separating plutocrats from their lucre. (See items here and here.) This time, though, I genuinely covet one of these "oligarch editions." The Man Booker Prize and Oak Tree Fine Press produce the "First Chapter Series," which combines fine art and first chapters of prize-winning novels. The latest offering is a signed, limited edition of Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty with a signed print by Gilbert and George.
The books are ₤150, and proceeds go to children affected by by HIV and AIDS. Details are here.--David E

Considering all proceeds go to children in Africa affected by HIV and AIDS, I'm extremely glad to see you didn't leave this project in the same category as a diamond encrusted book about entrepreneurship whose proceeds go to that, ahem, very same entrepreneur.
